A woman accused of failing to prevent the death of her 4-year-old daughter repeatedly lied to doctors and investigators about her relationship with a man now accused of raping the preschooler, prosecutors said Tuesday during opening statements at her trial.
But a defense attorney for Abigail Young, 34, of Spring, told jurors that Young had her daughter tested for leukemia when she noticed her frequent bruising and consulted doctors. Her daughter, Emma Thompson, died last year after suffering from a severed pancreas and fractured skull.
Young could face up to life in prison if convicted of injury to a child by omission. Prosecutors must prove Young knowingly or intentionally denied medical attention, protection or adult supervision to her daughter.
