ROYAL OAK, Mich. -- A man who pleaded no contest to nine felonies in a Detroit-area hit-and-run crash that left one person dead is headed to prison.

Thomas Grobbel, 24, of Madison Heights was sentenced Tuesday in Oakland County Circuit Court to at least eight years in prison.

Police said Grobbel was drunk when his truck crashed into a van on Interstate 696 going 97 miles per hour on July 20 in Royal Oak, killing 23-year-old Andrew Ross of Royal Oak and injuring three others.

Ross' father, Andrew Gene Doran, 45, also of Royal Oak, was seriously injured in the crash, as was Jared Nicholas Charest, 25, of Royal Oak.

The driver, Michael William Myke, 33, of Royal Oak suffered minor injures.

$Mom Charged In North Newton Babys Death A North Newton mother is behind bars and has now been charged in connection with the death of her 19-month-old son. Prosecutors say Katheryn Nicole Dale, 20, not only knew about the abuse happening in her home at the hands of her boyfriend but she also took part in the abuse of her son, who has now been identified as Vincent Hill. Dale was in court late Wednesday. Shes been charged with aggravated battery, child abuse and two counts of endangering a child. I feel confident that I can take a case to a jury that the mother physically contributed to injuries to this child, said Dave Yoder, Harvey County district attorney. A make-shift memorial is growing outside the home where Hill lived. Police were called there Saturday by 26-year-old Chad Carr, who is Dales boyfriend. He said the child wasnt breathing, but investigators now believe the toddler was the victim of abuse. Eyes swollen shut, leg twisted in an unnatural position, left collar bone fractured, terrible cuts on the inside of the mouth where the teeth had cut into the lips, Yoder said. Once an autopsy is complete Yoder may file murder charges in the case, likely against Carr since he was the last person with the child before he died. But the mother may also face additional charges. Ive been an attorney for 28 years, most as a prosecutor, and I have never seen injuries to a child like this, Yoder said.$
