My family moved to South Florida in 1919, when Florida had fewer than one million residents. Back then, life here was very different. The heat, humidity, mosquitoes, and summer storms made Florida a challenging place to live.
But the Florida we know today did not appear overnight. Generations of people came before us and built the foundation — the roads, canals, communities, hospitals, and infrastructure that made future growth possible.
Then two major changes transformed Florida: modern air conditioning and effective mosquito control. Today, nearly 24 million people call Florida home, not counting the millions of visitors who come each year.
Florida’s story is not just about the people who moved here recently. It is also about the people who came before and built the place we live in today.
