I recently watched a video about the seven things a gentleman should carry with him every day. It included things like the proper fragrance, a leather-bound notebook, and other items that apparently belong in the pockets of a well-prepared gentleman.
That got me thinking: What do I actually carry when I leave the house?
As it happens, I had just gotten back from walking to the polling place on a very hot, humid Florida morning. I emptied my pockets and started laying everything out.
And that's how this video happened.
This is my very unglamorous Everyday Carry for a Geezerly Gentleman.
There's a baseball hat with no logo, sunglasses, an MP3 player, a body camera, a mechanical metal pencil, two wallets (including a fake one), a notepad and pen, a carabiner, a multitool, old reading glasses, a disposable travel urine bag, an Osmo Pocket 2, an old Samsung Galaxy A21 with a cracked screen, an emergency information card, and pepper spray.
And every single item has a reason for being there.
Some are practical. Some are there because I've learned something over the years. Some are for convenience. And a few are there because, at my age, you learn to anticipate situations that younger people might never think about.
Even the completely blank baseball hat has a purpose. The sunglasses aren't just for the sun. The fake wallet isn't there by accident. And yes, I even have a reason for carrying a disposable urine bag!
But there's something else I think is important to carry: a reason to leave the house.
These days, almost everything can be delivered to your door—from Chinese food to Walmart, Home Depot, and the drugstore. Sometimes you need a reason to get out and actually interact with the world.
And finally, there's the most important thing of all:
A good mood.
The world can be an intimidating place, and there are certainly people you should be cautious around. But most people you encounter are perfectly nice. You don't want to go through life frightened of everyone or constantly looking over your shoulder.
So come along as I empty my pockets and explain why this particular geezer carries all this stuff around.
And perhaps, after all that, I should have taken the gentleman's advice and added a little fragrance to my EDC. 😄
