How the Choke Can Cause Engine Flooding in a Two-Stroke Engine
The choke is an essential component in two-stroke engines, including chainsaws, designed to aid in cold starts by restricting airflow into the carburetor. By limiting the amount of air and increasing the proportion of fuel in the air-fuel mixture, the choke creates a richer mixture that ignites more easily in a cold engine. However, improper use of the choke can lead to engine flooding, where excess fuel saturates the combustion chamber and prevents the engine from starting or running effectively.
Flooding occurs if the choke is left engaged for too long or used when the engine is already warm. In these cases, the restricted airflow causes an overabundance of fuel to enter the engine, overwhelming the spark plug's ability to ignite the mixture. Additionally, repeatedly pulling the starter cord with the choke on floods the engine further, as each pull pumps more fuel into the chamber without combustion.
