When people list off the worst kaiju movies ever made, they usually say the same names: Godzilla's Revenge, Gamera Super Monster, Reptilian, or whatever the Asylum churned out that year. I think this one beats them all, and the reason is almost embarrassing once you say it out loud: it barely qualifies as a kaiju movie in the first place. Warning from Space was released in Japan on January 29, 1956, with a title that roughly translates to “Aliens Appear In Tokyo”. The film has been sold to English-speaking audiences for over sixty years as a giant monster movie, and that sale is a flat out lie. There is no giant monster in this film. There is no city getting stomped. What you actually get is a slow, sincere science fiction drama about astrophysics, nuclear ethics, and a starfish-shaped alien learning to live as a Tokyo showgirl. If you came here expecting Godzilla smashing a skyscraper, congratulations: you got scammed by a poster. The marketing built the reputation this movie has been stuck with for sixty years, and the movie never earned a bit of it.
