I’ve been revisiting episodes of “The Simpsons” ever since the Fortnite collab and I really can’t get over how Modern Simpsons feels like a version of the show that forgot how to breathe. The early seasons had a lived-in warmth with quiet shots of the house at night that let Springfield feel like a real town. Now it feels like the episodes sprint. Every scene feels trimmed to the bone, like the writers are scared the audience might lose interest if there’s a pause in dialogue for more than a second. The digital animation only pushes things further away. The old hand-drawn wobble gave Springfield a pulse. You could feel humans behind the lines. Today everything is too smooth, too bright, too perfectly snapped into place. It’s technically impressive at times, but it has no warmth. It’s been said before but now it feels like a shell of its former self.
