On Waves and Particles I (original title: Von Wellen und Teilchen I) is a painting by Dutch contemporary artist Joachim van der Vlugt. In this painting, Joachim van der Vlugt juxtaposes the power of the ocean with ethereal geometric structures, inviting contemplation on the relationship between nature, perception, and abstraction.
Between abstraction and figuration, Joachim Van der Vlugt’s artworks are created through an amazing work on the light. Whereas the painted subjects let the spectator free to identify a dreamlike world, the artist’s work on the light structures the painting and creates the peculiar and fascinating feeling of reality. The geometric forms which superimpose in the foreground, like clues of an altered reality, incarnate the tacit agreement of a pictorial illusion that the artist is sharing with the spectator. Here, dark and light colors combine and create a landscape recalling the waves of the sea.
Joachim van der Vlugt art is strongly inspired by the classic Dutch masters. He intentionally uses a reduced dark colour palette: blacks and whites, browns, beiges and blues; the artist works the painting by building it up with several layers. The artist likes to work with light, with its’ subtlety and intensity. He combines into his artwork both shapes and geometric lines.
