Between abstraction and figuration, Joachim Van der Vlugt’s artworks are created through an amazing work on the light. Whereas the painted subjects let the spectator free to identify a dreamlike world, the artist’s work on the light structures the painting and creates the peculiar and fascinating feeling of reality. The geometric forms which superimpose in the foreground, like clues of an altered reality, incarnate the tacit agreement of a pictorial illusion that the artist is sharing with the spectator. Joachim van der Vlugt art is strongly inspired by the classic Dutch masters. He intentionally uses a reduced dark colour palette: blacks and whites, browns, beiges and blues that he applies on the painting in several layers.
