The Oliva Serie V Maduro used to be a limited edition cigar with only 6,000 boxes produced every year. Originally made with a Connecticut broadleaf maduro wrapper and then a Nicaraguan Habano, it is now made with a Mexican San Andrès. Today, it has been made part of the Serie V's permanent range.

The Serie V Maduro has a distinctive dark wrapper with an umber colour. It has a consistently straight roll with no discernable soft spots. The spring is although very firm without being hard. There seems to be a difference in oiliness on the wrapper between different vitolas. On the foot of the cigar, there are notes of nutmeg, star anise, and agarwood.

The draw is pleasant but offers a bit of resistance. It can be opened with a gentle massage. The dry draw flavours release cacao, café au lait, and cinnamon.
03:37 Tasting Notes
The first third delivers intense flavours of mahogany, paprika, and black pepper. The second third consists of cacao, espresso, and liquorice. Meanwhile, the final third has a composition of balsamic myrrh, cacao nibs, and black pepper.
The cigar is rewarding and complex with a velvet mouthfeel and a balanced palate stimulation. It offers a complex lifecycle and the finish is lingers well.

The draw remains consistent so it might be too tight for some. The construction is excellent with a straight burn line. Waviness is mild when not touched up and the temperature remains cool.
The ash backbane is relatively strong and can give a stack of the size of a third of the cigar.
08:03 Overall Experience
The band is almost identical to the original Serie V, which can be confusing. The only difference is that it says "Maduro Especial" rather than "Liga Especial" in small writing on the sides. However, it's ornate without being ostentatious.
However, it has a much more attractive box with hinges rather than one that slides.
As for the value, it's a little more expensive than the original Serie V but not by much. You can occasionally find them on sale when buying a box, which should bring it down to $7 per cigar.
In terms of occasion, it's a versatile cigar that's best enjoyed in the late evening or at night. It can be enjoyed with friends or taken to special or formal events.

Consider enjoying the cigar with a chargrilled tenderloin, especially grilled on a wood fire. Alternative, dark chocolate would be enjoyable. Finally, cured ham is an excellent marriage of flavour.
