I learned it from Robert Waltsak way back in the ’80s, and I’ve been using it ever since.
Use your fingernail as a guide. Hold the pencil with your thumb, pointer finger, and middle finger. Your middle finger is the guide that rides along the side of the material, keeping your line straight.
This is perfect for marking screw locations on 3/4-inch plywood. Measure out 3/8 of an inch, put your pencil point on the mark, place your middle finger against the material, and pull the pencil along to create the line.
Before you know it, you’ll be using this method without even thinking about it
