Classic cars and summer heat can be a bad combination — and if your engine is running hot, your radiator is already working overtime. Here's how we tackled it on Paige's 1964 Chevelle: an engine oil cooler install that takes real load off the cooling system and helps keep coolant temperatures in check when the heat is on.
The idea is simple but effective — the more heat you can pull out of the oil before it cycles back through the engine, the less work the radiator has to do. That means cooler coolant temps, a more efficient cooling system overall, and a real buffer against overheating when you're cruising in hot weather or sitting in traffic. On a classic car with a cooling system that wasn't exactly engineered for modern summer heat, every bit counts.
We cover the full install — cooler core, sandwich plate adapter, line routing through the engine bay, mounting decisions, and the stuff most install write-ups skip. Not a surgical step-by-step, but enough detail to actually help you do this yourself and understand why it works, not just how to bolt it on.
What we cover:
✅ Why engine oil heat is a hidden contributor to overheating
✅ How an oil cooler helps your radiator manage coolant temperature more efficiently
✅ Parts selection — cooler core, sandwich plate, lines & fittings, and why we chose them
✅ Routing and mounting on a '64 Chevelle chassis
✅ What to watch out for during install — clearance, fitting angles, re-filling oil
✅ Post-install impressions and temps
