Time to close up the hole we cut in Paige's '64 Chevelle floor — and build a shifter mount worthy of the new TCI 4L80E 6X 6-speed transmission.

In the last episode we cut into the trans tunnel to clear room for the much larger 4L80E 6X. In this episode, that tunnel gets fully rebuilt. Instead of a sharp-angled patch job that screams "this was cut," I dug through the shop's scrap pile and hand-formed rounded transitions into flat sheet metal until the new tunnel shape matched the factory floor contour. After welding it in and grinding it smooth, the modification is invisible unless you already knew it was there.

With the tunnel finished, the next challenge was mounting the TCI Diablo Blackout shifter. I built two different shifter mount designs — the first didn't sit right, so I scrapped it and built a second version that came out exactly the way we wanted. Paige and I both agreed the extra time was worth it. Don't forget, this is a drag and drive car so cup holders was another key element to get worked out with the shifter mount, maybe more important than the shifter mount functionality haha.
We wrap up by mocking up the new shifter mount and Diablo Blackout shifter in the car to confirm fitment before final installation and make sure the tumblers fit with the shifter — and it's right on the money.
