MrCheeze | Ocarina of Time - Beta Fire, Ice, and Wind medallion magic spells restored! @MrCheeze | Uploaded July 2020 | Updated October 2024, 3 days ago.
During earlier stages of development of Ocarina of Time, the six sage medallions were not just trinkets, they were equippable items. They could be used both on their own, to cast magic spells like in Link to the Past, as well as combined with the bow to create elemental arrows.
From clues left in the final game, there's actually a fair bit we know about the original effects of the magic spells.
- The Fire, Ice (Water), and Light Medallions all created offensive attacks. The fire medallion was later reworked into Din's Fire, but every enemy in the game is still coded to react to each of these attack types appropriately.
- The Wind (Forest) Medallion was turned into Farore's Wind.
- The Dark (Shadow) and/or Soul (Spirit) Medallion was reworked into Nayru's Love. The effect of the sixth and final medallion is completely unknown.
In the recent gigaleak, we got further confirmation that there were originally six magic spells, but unfortunately none of their code. But one thing we DID get is model files for Fire, Ice and Wind magic! These contain the models, textures, and partial animation info for these three spells. (Some of the animation is handled by code, which we don't have.)
Thanks to the OoT Decompilation project, it's actually possible to link these models back into the game, and see what their effects look like in real gameplay! Which is exactly what this video shows. Note that due to limitations of my reconstruction process, the textures for all three spells don't animate and swirl in the way that they're supposed to.
- Fire Magic is a flame explosion, similar to in the final game, but the way that they implemented the idea is somewhat different. Also, the colour information doesn't seem to be specified properly in the model, so it displays as the wrong colour in most scenes.
- Wind Magic seems to have no differences from Farore's Wind, other than those accidentally introduced by the reconstruction.
- Ice Magic summons two separate swirls of frost, that move in a distinct "X" pattern reminiscent of the pattern on the Ice (Water) Medallion.
The code for my reconstruction is here. Note that only the models are being rendered, making enemies actually taking Fire/Ice damage is beyond my knowledge of the OoT codebase. Also, using them in a lot of scenes crashes the game, for reasons I couldn't figure out.
