The 2012 Oakbank jumps racing carnival saw two jumps horses killed this year despite the Oakbank racing club stating the sport has been made much safer. Club Chairman John Glatz says that the live hedges (which resulted in the deaths of Virvacity and Art Success) are "more forgiving" on the horses.
The weekend carnival resulted in enormous negative publicity of both jumps racing and the Oakbank carnival.
We are calling on the sponsors of the Oakbank Racing Club to withdraw sponsorship of the club and carnival until jumps racing is scratched from the program.
With the RSPCA investigating the death of Art Success, jumps racing has never been under more scrutiny.
The Oakbank carnival will flourish without jumps racing, however while it continues, the race club and its sponsors will continue to be placed alongside the continuous bad publicity that jumps racing attracts.
