The U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory is a leader in tackling some of the nation’s most complex scientific and engineering challenges. Building on its origins in nuclear research and decades of innovation in packaging and transportation safety, Argonne has developed deep expertise in designing and securing systems for nuclear and radioactive materials.
Safely packaging and transporting nuclear and radioactive materials is essential to ensuring environmental protection, public health, and national security. As the nuclear industry grows and longtime experts retire, there is a pressing need to bridge the knowledge gap for new generations of scientists, engineers, and regulators entering this highly specialized field. Without this transfer of expertise, the industry risks workforce shortages and gaps in critical safety and security knowledge.
To address these challenges, Argonne has launched the Packaging University Summer Institute in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management Packaging Certification Program (DOE-EM PCP). Beginning in the summer of 2025, this annual program will provide graduate students, early- and mid-career professionals, and eventually high school students with in-depth training on packaging for nuclear and radioactive materials.
The Institute focuses on Safety, Security, and Safeguards (3S), combining Argonne’s unparalleled resources in packaging technology development, educational outreach, and program strategy. This initiative strengthens the STEM pipeline and helps equip a new generation of experts to tackle the unique challenges of nuclear packaging and transportation.
By fostering the next generation of professionals, the Summer Institute helps industry and regulators recruit, train, and retain motivated talent while advancing the DOE-EM Packaging University Program’s mission. This initiative reflects Argonne’s commitment to building a safer, more secure future through education and innovation.
