To make nitrogen ice, you will need liquid nitrogen and a two stage vacuum pump. Mason jars are helpful. Use a plastic cup and fill it with liquid nitrogen. Then use a two stage vacuum pump to evacuate the air out of the mason jar containing the cup of liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen will boil rapidly until the temperature drops to -210°C. At that point, the nitrogen liquid will freeze into crystalline ice. Then all the boiling stops and the crystalline solid nitrogen will slowly sublime. As long as the vacuum is kept active, the solid nitrogen will last for a long time depending on the volume of liquid nitrogen used. It’s an amazing demonstration!!
