This easy to make nail firing cannon was a really fun project. It uses a powerful electromagnetic pulse generated by discharging a high voltage total 1000J energy from a capacitor bank through a coil wire. Detailed instructions on how to make your own can be found on uzzors website:

The key element is a solid state switch that can high current also known as an SCR. Only a small percentage (about 3%) of the energy stored in the capacitor bank is transferred to the projectile. The test is wasted as heat!
