The high Sierras in Northern California continue to get much needed snowfall after what started out as a very dry season. Areas are expected to get a total of 6 to 12 inches, with potentially heavier amounts in higher elevations. However, so much snow is falling in the Sierra backcountry that the Sierra Avalanche Center has issued a Backcountry Avalanche Warning for the greater Lake Tahoe region.
TIMING...IN EFFECT FROM THU 07:00 PST TO FRI 07:00 PST.
* AFFECTED AREA...CENTRAL SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAINS BETWEEN YUBA PASS (HWY 49) ON THE NORTH AND EBBETTS PASS (HWY 4) ON THE SOUTH, INCLUDING THE GREATER LAKE TAHOE AREA.
* AVALANCHE DANGER...THE AVALANCHE DANGER FOR THE WARNING AREA IS EXPECTED TO RISE TO HIGH TODAY.
* REASON/IMPACTS...FORECAST HEAVY SNOW COMBINED WITH WIND MAY RESULT IN WIDESPREAD AVALANCHES.
