DMG, Dimethylglyoxime or Diacetyldioxime is a very useful reagent to test for certain metals. Most famous might be the Nickel(II) complex which is insoluble and characteristically red in color. It can be even used to test the amount of Nickel in solution as it will filter almost any Nickel and precipitate it which can be dried and weighed.

Two DMG ligands will coordinate via the N-Atoms to form a square planar environment around the Nickel center which also offers a great kinetic stability. These so called chelating ligands, so ligands, that coordinate on more than one position simultaneously form really fast as one coordination automatically locks the center close enough to the other coordinating positions of the ligand. Therefore this complexes form really fast and in order to substitute them one would have to dissolve two or more bonds at the same time which gives these complexes a great stability. This is what we call kinetically favored or kinetic stability.
