She's been written about before, of course - and that, many a time - but perhaps to mark the centenary of her birth, herewith the crowning touch: a first-rate biography of Julia Child, five hundred pages strong, by an old and seasoned pro.
Dearie is a delight. It could have been subtitled "Portrait of a Marriage", given the astonishing degree of affection and support her indulgent husband, Paul, provided; but as it is, we have here as fine an account of them both as we are likely to have in our lifetimes.
This remarkable lady, as daunting as she was endearing, ushered in televised gastronomy almost single-handed - along with classic French cuisine. In so doing, she not only drove a coach and horses through the Betty Crocker era, but did so with such vim and vigour that she virtually launched PBS on her own.
Tall and gangly, but endowed with a heart of gold and humour to match, her colourful legacy lives on, as does her durable oeuvre.
A well-written, door-stopper of a book that rounds out the rough edges and becomes the one to beat.
