Little did Winston Graham suspect, when Ross Poldark, the book that began it all, was first published in 1945, that it would become a 12-volume series, let alone be televised twice, forty years apart. But so it has happily proved; and this swashbuckling saga, set in Cornwall, replete with adventure, romance, intrigue and skulduggery, carries all the components necessary to keep it permanently in print.
Demelza is still your correspondent’s favourite (and Bella Poldark, perhaps, our least), but all of them remain totally up to snuff, and are thoroughly enjoyable.
Our friends at PBS, meanwhile, have taken on the series from the BBC for a fourth season, which, by all accounts, is even better than its predecessors.
