Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly #contagious #viraldisease that affects cloven-hoofed animals, including #cattle.

But a recent research study published in the journal Science in May 2011 by scientists at the Institute for Animal Health (IAH) and Defra has uncovered a critical window of opportunity to identify and isolate #FMDV-infected cattle before they become infectious or exhibit any symptoms of the disease.

This breakthrough has the potential to significantly reduce the number of animals culled during an outbreak.
