The September 1 Experimental update for Subnautica 2 is here, and while Scorpius Trenches didn't receive a massive new story expansion this time, the developers have added a lot more detail to the environment and several very interesting new crafting materials.
In this video I explore the latest version of Scorpius Trenches and show what's changed.
Most of the biome work appears focused on fleshing out the terrain with:
🪨 Rocks and boulders
🌿 Additional plants
💎 Resource deposits
🏗️ Structural and terrain changes
🌊 More environmental detail
There doesn't appear to be a major new story sequence in this build, but the new resources give us some interesting clues about future crafting and progression.
🔥 Crystallized Methane
The methane bubbles rising out of the tar can now provide a new material called:
Crystallized Methane
This material is described as usable as a fuel, finally giving those strange gas bubbles scattered throughout Scorpius a clear purpose.
💛 Hydraulic Bulb Pod
There's also a new glowing yellow plant-like resource called the:
Hydraulic Bulb Pod
Its description says it contains a non-condensable fluid.
My theory is that this could eventually connect to the SeaFrog Chassis or other heavy machinery.
Hydraulic systems are commonly used for high-force mechanical movement, so a dedicated hydraulic material would make a lot of sense for something like the SeaFrog's legs, claws, lifting systems, or other heavy equipment.
That connection is still speculation, but the resource definitely looks like it was added with some kind of machinery-focused crafting role in mind.
🐚 Great Jaw Pearl Shards
Large pearl deposits are also scattered throughout Scorpius.
You can break them apart and collect the smaller pearl pieces they produce.
The Great Jaw itself is already associated with lithium-rich pearls, so Scorpius increasingly looks like a biome built around harvesting biological resources from its giant creatures.
🧪 Volatile Acid
And from the previous Experimental content, we also have:
Volatile Acid
This can be produced by taking the large acidic sack harvested from a dead Great Jaw and feeding it into the Resource Grinder. The grinder then converts it into usable Volatile Acid.
Put everything together and Scorpius is clearly becoming a very resource-heavy biome built around harvesting, processing, and transporting unusual materials.
⚠️ Everything shown here is unfinished Experimental content. Materials, recipes, uses, locations, and progression can all change before reaching the normal Early Access build.
