The new Freelander 8 has officially opened pre-orders in China with up to 818 horsepower and a starting price of around $50,000. Developed through the collaboration between Chery and Jaguar Land Rover, this is a very different interpretation of the Freelander name.
The Freelander 8 combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged range extender with a 60.3-kilowatt-hour CATL battery and dual electric motors producing a combined 610 kilowatts, or 818 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive system delivers 813 Newton-meters of peak torque and can accelerate the large sport utility vehicle from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 4.6 seconds.
Its 800-volt electrical architecture supports 6C fast charging, allowing the battery to go from 20% to 80% in a claimed 12 minutes. Pure electric range reaches up to 310 kilometers under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle.
Technology is another major part of the Freelander 8 story. The vehicle features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 automotive processor and Huawei Qiankun Smart Driving ADS 5. It also offers an intelligent all-terrain system, front, center, and rear locking capability, standard rear-wheel steering, and even a crab-walk function.
Inside, passengers get a massive 46.3-inch display, a 15.6-inch center screen, crystal controls, zero-gravity second-row seats, heating, ventilation, massage functions, an onboard refrigerator, and rear entertainment.
Pricing begins at 339,900 yuan, or approximately $50,000, while the limited First Edition reaches 449,900 yuan at its promotional price. Only 1,000 First Edition vehicles are planned.
