Ford is investing $2 billion to completely transform its Louisville Assembly Plant for the upcoming Fathom electric truck.
With a targeted price below $30,000, the Ford Fathom could become one of the company's most important new electric vehicles.
Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, but the bigger story may be how Ford plans to build it. The company is replacing the traditional moving assembly line approach with its new Universal Production System, using a 3 branch manufacturing process designed to reduce complexity and increase production speed.
Large single piece aluminum castings will allow the front and rear sections of the Fathom to be assembled separately, while another section handles the structural battery, seats, console, and carpeting. Ford expects the new system to make assembly a net 15% faster than vehicles previously produced at the Louisville plant.
The factory itself is also undergoing major changes, including expanded wireless internet infrastructure with 1,080 access points to support software testing and production quality checks.
Ford expects prototype Fathom trucks to begin production during the first quarter of 2027, followed by customer vehicles later that year. With a targeted price below $30,000, the Fathom could give Ford a very different position in the affordable electric pickup market.
