The historical music for solo viola da gamba has all been recorded, some of it many times, by people who play far better than I ever shall. Therefore, I have focused my efforts on harmonizing and arranging historical melodies for the instrument and on writing my own original pieces, though in a historical style. The present collection comprises ten pieces. As the title suggests by the word "New," they are original compositions, and, as it suggests by the word "Ayres," deliberately spelled in the archaic way, they are stand-alone melodies harmonized for the instrument in a 17th to 18th-century style.
