While living most of his life under the confines of Soviet Russia, Nicolai Kapustin developed a love of American Jazz and is known for his fusion of jazz and classical music forms in his compositions. This video is a live performance of a piece he titled ‘Nearly Waltz’ which exemplifies this fusion exquisitely. It is a demanding piece, both technically and rhythmically…indeed unlike a conventional waltz, much of it is written in 5/4 rather than in ¾!
