Astor Piazzolla was an Argentinian composer famous for his tangos, in which he incorporated jazz and classical music forms. He was born in Argentina but spent much of his childhood in New York City, which is where he was exposed to jazz at an early age. He composed Le Grand Tango in 1982, which he dedicated to the late Russian cellist Mtislav Rostropovich, who premiered the piece in 1990 in New Orleans. It uses the primary rhythm of the tango, with the cello melodies forming the dramatic twists and turns of the dance itself, including glissandi and syncopation flourishes. It has three main sections, the first alternating rhythmic passionate passages with more lyric sultry sections. The second is lyrical and melodic, with playful and introspective moments. The third part is an exciting rhythmic finale, which incorporates jazzy elements in the piano and which builds in intensity to a grand climax.
