Melodic Canvases: Music Inspired by Art
The Kermess (Peasant Dance) by Pieter Brueghel the elder (circa 1525 -1569)
Pieter Brueghel the elder was a Flemish painter whose work reflected his peasant origins, much of it being a celebration of common life, albeit with moral and religious overtones typical of the time. While at first glance the painting appears to present a jovial village dance, there is also depiction of anger, drunkenness and gluttony, amorous activity, and a blithe disregard for the church in the distance. This painting inspired movement one of Stephen Paulus’s Art Suite, for cello and piano. Movement one (The Kermess) of Stephen Paulus’s Art Suite captures the raucous spirit of the dance as well as it’s lilting quality.
