Future Associate worked on 500+ VFX shots across NCIS: Sydney Season 3, covering environments, creatures, vehicles, fire and pyro, FX simulations, destruction and compositing.
This video features Part 1 of Future Associate's VFX breakdown, showcasing several of the major visual effects sequences created for the season.
The team created a detailed CG Antarctic research base for the Polar Night sequence. The production used a partial practical set, which Future Associate extended into a full Antarctic environment with CG structures, satellite dishes, storage tanks, fences, walkways, antennas and snow and ice details. The surrounding landscape, sky and lighting were also enhanced to establish the remote polar setting.
For the flying sequence, Future Associate created a CG passenger aircraft flying through the Antarctic night. The environment combined cloud elements, CG cloud cards and Houdini FX to create the fast-moving atmospheric conditions around the aircraft.
The season also opens with a major submarine tunnel explosion. Future Associate combined practical effects with multiple Houdini simulations, including hero smoke, secondary debris and detailed pressure-wave effects moving through the tunnel. The team also used on-set LIDAR, lighting references and camera data to accurately integrate the digital effects with the live-action footage.
Another sequence involved fire inside a glass-walled room. Since the fire could not be safely created practically, the team used on-set lighting for actor interaction and added the fireball digitally during post-production using live-action fire elements.
Future Associate also worked on Sydney Harbour fireworks, compositing fireworks elements into the Harbour environment around the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Chinatown while tracking the camera and rotoscoping foreground elements for accurate integration.
The breakdown also features large-scale destruction and explosions, including a daytime house explosion and a nighttime car explosion. The team enhanced the practical explosions with digital shockwaves, CG vehicle parts, additional fire elements and compositing work that allowed characters and stunt performers to be positioned much closer to the explosions than was possible during filming.
