The 1956 National Teenage "Road-eo" (Roadeo) was a safety driving competition for jaycees; which were members of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce Foundation (USJCC), that included a written test, a simulator test, and an actual driving test on and around the Washington, DC National Mall. The Road-eo driving competition, conceived in 1951 and implemented in 1952 first at the city level, then the state level, and finally at a national competition held in Washington, DC. Conceived in 1951, the USJCC, and Liberty Mutual provided a considerable grant of $18,000, to develop a safety driving competition for jaycee . It would be called The National Teenage Road-eo, sponsored by American Trucking Associations, Inc., Chrysler Corporation and The Pure Oil Company. Each Jaycee contestant would have to not only take a written driving safety exam on driving safety, they were tested on a driving simulator, and had to execute safe and proper driving techniques during a practical driving test. The practical driving test included having to parallel park a 1955 Chrysler without touching or knocking over a flag.
The National Teenage "Road-eo" (Roadeo), implemented in 1952 along with the LEM Program (Leadership, Extension and Membership) attracted teen contestants from 34 U.S. states and Canada, who competed for prize money. At the end of a very successful first year event, the USJCC earned special recognition from the National Committee for Traffic Safety. That prompted Liberty Mutual to increase their grant with an additional $46,000 the following year, making it an even larger event.
This footage suggests that the National Teenage Roadeo was an excellent way to entice and teach young drivers to drive safely. Anyone want to bring this competition back?
