King Rose Archives | #chrysler Prowler Concept Car (1993) @KingRoseArchives | Uploaded March 2023 | Updated October 2024, 20 hours ago.
It has been called the first and last production hot rod, the Chrysler Plymouth Prowler concept car was first introduced at the Chrysler Technology Center in January 1993. The Chrysler Plymouth Prowler was designed by Douglas "Chip" Foose, the youngest member to be indicted into the Hot Rod hall of fame. When it was first unveiled, it generated significant interest from the public and the media, but not everyone was sold on the Prowler. Some automotive journalists referred to the car as "indulgent" and even "downright hideous," however, Chrysler proceeded with their plans to put it into production in 1997.
Originally designed as a coupe, Foose later modified it as a roadster. The Prowler was a two-door, rear-wheel-drive vehicle, with a retro-styled design reminiscent of classic American hot rods and custom cars of the 1930s and 1940s. It featured a long hood, short rear deck, and prominent fenders, as well as a low-slung, aggressive stance. Under the hood, the Prowler was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produced 214 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The car was also equipped with an independent front suspension, a four-link rear suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes.
The production version of the Prowler was largely similar to the concept car, with some minor changes to the exterior and interior design. Production of the Prowler continued until 2002, with a total of 11,702 units produced. While the Prowler was not a commercial success for Chrysler, it remains a unique and distinctive vehicle that is highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts. The original audio for this video featured a song by ZZ Top, but in 1996 ZZ Top sued (and won) Chrysler for using their song at a press event without their permission. #FunFact about the Plymouth Prowler, it could go from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds.
