On a visit to Seward, Alaska we spotted National Geographic Orion anchored in the bay. The Orion is an expedition cruise ship operated by New York City-based Lindblad Expeditions / National Geographic. Fares on expedition cruise ships are on the higher end of the spectrum and can cost many times what an average Caribbean cruise to the would cost. Expedition cruise ships are far from your “ordinary” cruise ship though and many believe what they offer is well worth the extra expense. Expedition ships are always smaller ships (no Oasis of the Seas here), as they need to get close up to the beautiful scenery, the land, the wildlife and into smaller more boutique ports. If you have a truly exotic destination, such as Antarctica, then odds are you’ll need to book a cruise on an expedition cruise ship to get there. These ships are often equipped with extra sturdy hulls for traversing dangerous ice filled waters. Like other expedition ships, we can see that the Orion has a number of tenders, zodiacs and inflatable boats to get passengers to and from the point of interest on shore quickly and efficiently. Since the National Geographic Orion cruise ship was anchored in Seward, it was likely going to or coming from the Kenai Fjords National Park (see our video on that boat cruise). You also may notice that the National Geographic Orion has extensive observation decks allowing for excellent vantage points of the nature around the ship. Speaking of nature, expedition ships such as the Orion are often staffed with naturalists and professional expedition leaders to enhance your experience.
