Autistic people of all ages stim, autistic kids stim, autistic adults stim to some degree. Examples of stimming include biting fingernails, hair twirling, cracking knuckles, drumming your fingers, whistling. Autism stimming is typically more repetitive and noticeable in comparison with rocking, autistic flap hands, bouncing, jumping, walking on tiptoes, repetitive blinking, rearranging objects as some autistic stimming examples. These types of autism stimming are a fraction of the different autistic stims that there are out there but stimming in its nature is a way for autistic people to self-sooth when feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated (hypersensitive). Sometimes its to create sensory stimulus due to being understimulated (hyposensitive). Stimming could be due to sensory issues so autistic people might stim due to it being a stimming behavior. These are really broad explanations to why autistic people have stimming behaviours.
