My first New Zealand backpacking trip was a disaster - until it wasn't. After a wonderful few days in the Auckland area recovering from jet lag, seeing old friends, and visiting a place I've always wanted to go (Hobbiton!), it all went wrong. Historic storms hit the north island causing heavy rains, wind, flooding, land slides and even evacuations. My originally planned trip to take the train to Tongariro National Park and backpack for three days around Mt. Ngauruhoe had been totally derailed. With my adventure in Aotearoa starting as a failure, I had to scramble to figure out what to do next. The backpacking trip I ended up doing might have been one of the most memorable, and challenging, trips I've ever done...
