I remember the exact moment I decided to dive into modular synthesis.
I had been working as a trumpet player for years, playing in orchestras & doing session work. I LOVED playing trumpet, but at the same time, there were aspects of my music-making I was really struggling with.
I felt drained & truthfully a bit uninspired. I loved trumpet, but was feeling a bit lost in terms of my personal musical voice.
I wanted more independence in my musical practice—to be able to have a musical idea & know enough technically to be able to actually make it happen.
As much as I loved performing, I ALSO wanted to explore other possible career-paths as a musician (eg. I was super curious about film scoring & sound design…)
And then? BAM.
Or more like “beep bloop!” 👋
I discovered modular synthesis.
I had NO tech background, no experience, and no clue where it would lead me, but I dove in head first.
The really amazing thing is that learning to play modular synths was only a small part of what happened next:
I started developing a new electroacoustic practice that combined trumpet with modular, & felt unique & exciting to me…
I started composing my own music, improvising, & performing solo live shows…
Learning synthesis gave me the confidence to jump into other music production topics, which led me to self-releasing my first album…
I started scoring independent films, doing sound design for commercials, & getting called for collaborations to play “that crazy trumpet + electronics stuff.” #truejoy
What I’m trying to say is: when you dive into something you’re passionate & curious about, you never know how many ways it might transform your life. I thought I was just checking out a new hobby for a moment... but I ended up finding my musical path for a lifetime. ❤️ (corny but true.)
