Many people view the end of slavery in 1865 as distant history, but its legacy is deeply rooted in our region. The North Country played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, with local churches and private homes serving as safe havens for freedom seekers on their final journey to Canada. In modern times, that history is preserved and shared through the work of the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association, which operates the North Star Underground Railroad Museum in Ausable Chasm, New York.
Jacqueline Madison is the President of the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association (NCUGRHA) which oversees the North Star Underground Railroad Museum.
