This species is known to perch in the high canopy, so it was a pleasant surprise to meet one perched at eye level.
It was resting quietly among the shady foliage in the midday heat.
This beautiful dove is sizeable at an average of 18 inches long. In fact, it is the largest pigeon species in its range.
It has beautiful greyish-pink plumage over its head & underparts, but it is its purplish-maroon upperparts & wings that is particularly striking. The latter lends it its other name, the Maroon-backed Imperial Pigeon. Coupled with pale irises and a white-tipped red bill, it is an outstanding looking pigeon indeed in terms of appearance and size.
Its natural habitat includes forests & wooded areas, and occasionally coastal forests.
It has a wide range from the Himalayas across to Indochina & southern China, down the Malay Peninsula and the islands of Sumatra & Borneo.
