More Profit from Nitrogen is a partnership of Australia’s four major intensive users of nitrogen (N) fertiliser: cotton, dairy, sugar and horticulture through Cotton Research and Development Corporation, Dairy Australia, Sugar Research Australia Ltd and Hort Innovation Australia Ltd (Mangoes & Cherries). It aims to bring about increased farm profitability and reduced environmental impact by increasing N use efficiency (NUE) across the four industry sectors, resulting in a reduction of the amount of N required to produce each unit of product. In this video we visit a new 2019 satellite site near Taree, NSW, of The Queensland University of Technology dairy project. Here, a 15N isotope is being used to trace N contribution from soil sources (mineralised N) and the fate of fertiliser applied N during the autumn transition from kikuyu to ryegrass dominant pasture. The work is being conducted to better inform N application decisions during this important period for coastal NSW dairy pasture systems. More can be discovered by visiting the Program’s website: https://www.crdc.com.au/more-profit-nitrogen . This project is supported by funding from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture and Water Resources as part of its Rural R&D for Profit program.
