모란봉악단 - 조선로동당 만세 련곡
Recorded: October 2015 Mokran Video DPRK
A very nicely put together medley of songs to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea. By mostly using parts of older well-known songs the arranger/composer here actually has created a kind of mini-opera.
Spanning from the lyrical duet where the young girl (Jo Kuk-hyang) confess to her mother to the drama when Ryu Jina fights her inner conscience, portrayed by the high soprano vocalice of Pak Mi-kyong, ending in the open question "Who is calling me?". After a long instrumental interlude we get the answer "Mother". In north Korean art the Workers Party is the mother of the nation and their leader the father. Then follows a waltz (Glory to our great Party) where we get to know the mythical history of the Korean people and finally the Grand Finale "Hail to the Workers Party of Korea". All this with instrumental interludes of high musical/rhythmic complexity, keeping the instrumentalists on there toes.
Even if you don't comply with north Korean politics you simply must bow to their high level of musical art.
