A huge fire destroyed a majority of the buildings in 1895; but almost all the buildings you see downtown are the originals from reconstruction pre-1900s! Today, the town combines with Barre, Vermont to form 'the twin cities', and serves as home to many insurance companies, including National Life Group (established in 1848, now one of the largest in the US). Montpelier hosts the world-famous Green Mountain Film Festival each year!
