This visual effects video tutorial shows you in general how monster maw in no time for neat looking horror effect.
The idea is to stylelize with the little we have, a scrolling background image of a forest. That image we take and use the panorama effect to create a circling aswell as a going into the center/retreating motion. That's it!

This basics video tutorial shows you how to create a very simple follow a target Ai/pathfinding in one line of code for GameMaker Studio 2.
These linear functions you can find under motion planning in the GameMaker manual. By using mp_linear_step, mp_linear_step_object, mp_linear_path or mp_linear_path_object in the step event the instance in question tries to get to the target point assigned. And that is pretty much it. If a direct path isnt possible (because some instances are flagged as solid and you set checkall as true) it will get stuck if it collides.
In part Pathfinding #2 we will discuss a more versatile function the, mp_potential_step which can be used to avoid collision and actually go around instances blocking the path. This is of course a bit limited if you have maze like structures which require a bit more complex approaches. This will be solved in Pathfinding #3.

This basics video tutorial shows you how to make a screen shake and toggle it off and on with just one line of code.
This is the quick and dirty/easy way how to make it. You simply create an effect layer and set the effect to screen shake. To toggle it off and on you simply set the visibility of this effect layer to on or off (which enables/disables this effect). Thats it!
Note: I have done a video years before by taking the camera view and shake that up. YoYo Games inserted this neat (and easier to use) functionality inside GameMaker, so you can use this one also.

This basics video tutorial shows you how to create a very simple follow a target Ai/pathfinding in one line of code for GameMaker Studio 2.
These potential functions you can find under motion planning in the GameMaker manual. By using mp_potential_step, mp_potential_step_object, mp_potential_path or mp_potential_path_object in the step event of the instance in question it tries to get to the target point assigned plus avoid solid instances/the instance to check. And that is pretty much it.
This method is very easy and powerful in levels that have no difficult terrain like rocks or tree where the potential function is good enough to guide the enemy instance around it. Mazes or more complex level structures will be a challenge to impossible to guide through.

This video tutorial covers the concept of how to create a metroidvana map in GameMaker. Every good sidescroller/metroidvania has it and now I can offer a simple, scaleable and performative version to you without tanking your performance.
The idea is quite simple, you need two things: Data and an instance displaying that data
first a data structure that holds all your maps information which hold each cells internal values like x,y position, color, if discovered, room id and each walls index (none, simple wall, connector).
Second you need an instance that get the correct center postion and in used event draws 1:1 each cells on a surface with the size of rows/columns of the data structure. That drawing is being stored in the vram as a sprite and once not needed destroyed afterwards. This is how the map becomes very fast and performative since you only have one draw event.
The following parts will be adding extra features like start location, visited/not explored cells aswell as map movement and zooming.

The newest patch V2022.11 comes with some good quality updates for strings and arrays plus new sound filters and some new vfx filters.
This update is more a technical one, where we get new ways to use strings and arrays with new functionality. The idea is to insert your own functions into GameMakers new array functions/scripts for sorting or manipulating values. There are also more new ways to change/manipulate strings also, which is now more efficient to chain/concatenate. The new sounds effects are for me a new field, so I leave that to more experienced users. Binary literals are in a nutshell other ways to write, which will be most like only used to write long numbers visually easier. And last but not least we got new filters to play around with. These appear to be more niche, but time will tell what the community does with them.

The newest patch V2022.6 comes with some good quality updates, new fx effects and the big fish, the feather feature.
The update looks lightweight on the outside, but feather is a great new feature for us coders/developers to help out in code, show instantly informations about code/assets, can correct code and can be customized even further (name spaces, etc.). All in all, a solid addition to the ide which is much apprecitated.

This epic video tutorial shows you a working example how to create a procedual level map generation on the fly in GameMaker.
This video is only a preview (video incoming) of the coding part to show what can be done in GameMaker or any other ide. Since this is a very advanced topic you need to have a good understanding of basics and advanced concepts. So arrays, loops, accessor are a common thing for you. The following video will be going into the coding part.
How it works:
The idea is in principle quite easy. You have at start a cell of your map that has 4 branches in each direction. These branches are being created by checking first if the new neigbour cell is free. Then it needs to assing a sprite to which has two exits/openings (one openeing connecting to the current location and one 2 steps ahead). To determin if this sprite can be set for the new cell you need to check another step ahead if on the openening (so two steps ahead) if this spot is also free. If not this cell is an endpoint of this branch.
The second part is the transition of of the map into level structure with a player and enemies. This is shown in the video but will be not part of the upcoming video (because I dont want to make this already long and complex video even longer).
