Heir to an ancestral culture yet dealing with an environment in full transformation, Ogui, a young female doctor and nomadic herder in Mongolia, is trying to meet the challenge of modernizing her country. Stemming from a generation transitioning from the Communist era and democracy, Ogui is 35 years old. Born on the Steppe of two nomadic herder parents, she and her husband, Bayarmagnaî, have two young daughters. Since 2011 and in addition to her activity as a farmer, she’s been practicing itinerant community medicine. Equipped with a yurt for a clinic, a few accessories, and medicine, she roams the Steppe all year round to help the nomad herders of the region. Her outlook on the radical changes that have affected her native Mongolia in the last few decades sheds light on the need to try and find hybrid solutions in order to safeguard this thousand-year-old lifestyle, while transitioning towards a modern Mongolia. Both simple and complex, the issues pertaining to her life choices along with the doubts and certainties as to the future of nomadism build up the outline of a story that unfolds in the faraway Steppe of the Zavkhan Province day after day.
