War propaganda became a powerful weapon during the First World War, as governments, militaries and the press used newspapers, photography and cinema to shape how populations saw the conflict. Britain, France, Germany and later the United States developed different approaches to mobilizing public opinion and portraying the enemy.
Atrocity stories, censorship and staged images blurred the boundary between reporting and propaganda. The British Battle of the Somme reached millions of viewers, while Germany created its own film institutions and controlled what civilians could see of the front. In the United States, President Wilson established a propaganda office and the Four Minute Men carried its messages across the country.
By the war’s end, the gap between official images and lived reality had become increasingly difficult to maintain. The images created during these years continued to shape memories of the First World War long after 1918.
