Today we take for granted how easy it is to conduct financial transactions, whether we're paying with cash, check, or credit card. But it wasn't always so: in early America, money was scarce, unreliable, possibly worthless; banks could (and did) fail with frightening regularity; and paying with credit was remarkably complicated. If you want to know the difference between a shinplaster, specie, and a greenback tune in... if for no other reason than to find out how fortunate we are in 2021 to be able to pay for groceries without referencing three different documents!
