In this Monday Minute in the Archives, we take a closer look at a small but striking treasure—a miniature Statue of Liberty sculpture now on display at the Reagan Library as part of the America 250 exhibition.
In 1985, Mary and Nick Matthews gifted this beautiful piece to President Reagan. Designed and produced for the Danbury Mint, the sculpture is a miniature, turquoise-metal version of the Statue of Liberty, resting on a handsome wooden base.
What makes this piece so special is hidden in the details. The base features a silver coin stamped with the Statue of Liberty Centennial Logo. Just below the coin, a small metal plaque reads, "Plated with copper from the actual Statue of Liberty." That means a piece of Lady Liberty herself lives on in this very sculpture.
This artifact is part of the Reagan Library's America 250 exhibition, a special collection honoring 250 years of American history and the symbols that unite us.
