In this Monday Minute in the Archives, we shine a light on a rare piece of American history—a commemorative silver coin now on display at the Reagan Library as part of the America 250 exhibition.

In 1986, the nation celebrated the Statue of Liberty Centennial, marking 100 years since Lady Liberty first stood watch over New York Harbor. To honor the occasion, James Hill gifted this beautiful silver coin. The front features the Statue of Liberty herself, while the back carries the words "Statue of Liberty Centennial."

What makes this coin so special is the tiny number stamped into it: 0001. That's right—this was the very first coin in the series, making it a true one-of-a-kind treasure.

This artifact is part of the Reagan Library's America 250 exhibition, a special collection honoring 250 years of American history and the symbols that unite us.
