Monasterio de Santa Catalina is an enormous convent. It is situated on an entire city block of Arequipa. Built in 1580, the convent has everything needed to sustain a population of 450 in a cloistered community inside tall but sturdy walls. The nuns were sent to the convent from rich families in Europe and lived lavish lives. Some in had slaves. However, now there are only 20 nuns living in a small corner of the convent with most of the facility opened to tourists. Meandering through the maze of pastel streets, well appointed private rooms, and charming plazas is a real delight.
