From Cafayate we continued along route 40 to Cachi. The fertile wine valley of cafayate transformed into the dry but beautiful Calcahqui valley. One of the most stunning geological features of the region is the Quebrada del las Flechas, The canyon of arrows. The road passes through 17th century colonial towns full of very proud but equally poor populations of indigenous people. Each town has a typical but cute two story white or pastel stucco church with thick walls, twin bell towers, colorful trim, and a cactus roof. The oldest one here is in Molinos (which means dust devils) built in 1639. The village of Cachi, is a charming 16th century colonial village with white washed adobe buildings and cobblestone streets. Just outside Cachi is extraordinary Los Cardones National park, dotted with thousands of giant cactus on a high plain, it is one of the most beautiful desert landscapes in Argentina.
